Weeds and Wild Flowers

Today I took my camera for a walk, the first in a long, long time. I've been waiting for inspiration to hit me. For me to feel like going and doing. Inspiration didn't come. Instead today I hit a new low and realised that I had to go and do something or I was going to sink. So I did.

The pond is unusually green for this time of year. Other times of year I've been here and the mud has been dried and cracked and the plants various shades of brown.

In writing those words I remembered that I had written a post called 'shades of brown' previously so I just went in search of it. Ironically it was written almost exactly 2 years ago.

The walk with my camera has helped occupy my time and distract my mind, but more than that I now realise that I do have to feel like going in order to do it. There are plenty of things I do when I don't feel like doing them but I motivate myself because they are necessary. Just like this was.

There is nothing like walking and especially with a camera to let you relax and soothe the soul, not sure if it is just being out in the fresh air or what but I always feel better after doing this. Nobody says you have to, go when you can enjoy it.

Lisa, it's great to see your blog post! I'm not sure if you feel like reading but some time ago I read Fools Gold by Susan G Wooldridge. She writes about how she found solace and began to heal from several upheavals in her life. She went on walks and bought back anything from twigs and pods to rusty bottle caps, sweet wrappers and yellowing newspaper scraps. These she assembled into collage boxes, one a day, for a year. She said it was like an invitation to her soul to become visible.

I'm now reading (and loving) her other book, Poem Crazy. She speaks about collecting words and writing them down wherever she goes. These she fashions into poems. It is also about her work with children and how she draws them out of themselves with word play ... poetry. Very moving in parts.

I like the idea that Susan Wooldridge has for walks ... my thanks to Art Propelled for bringing it up. Sadly, that book isn't available in our library system but "Poem Crazy" is, so I'll begin with that.

That said, I'm sure I wouldn't really do it, but looking at the pond makes me want to kick off my shoes, roll up the pant legs and get my toes seriously into some mud! Oh well, there's probably critters in there that live on toes. :O

I think it's admirable that you made yourself go out there and make photos to share with us. That's at least one accomplishment. You should be proud of yourself. It's more than some of us do.

Thanks for letting me take the walk with you through your blog. Lovely photos. Just read that a writer's response to the question- how do you write such long intricate books- and her response was " one word at a time'. Just love it. xo Jill

I love that you 'took your camera on a walk' and further down, how photography is how you BE in nature. That pond is really something, so thick with water illies.
Wishing you more walks and wonderments.

there are so many creative people whose daily work begins with a walk...apparently even Beethoven took a walk with a notebook when he was working out tricky bits! lovely images here.
