This is my completed collage, inspired by Billy Apple.
I havn't tried to copy him but I have allowed myself to be influenced by his ideas. Below is a brief history on the long history of Billy Apple (seperate post.) Don't forget to Google to see more of his art!
About this collage:
Media- Leaves, seed pods, pattern paper, paint, mesh, cotton buds, playing card, needles and thread.
The leaves have been deconstructed by either myself or by nature as a reflection of Billy Apples fascination of the process of deconstruction.
The cotton buds are a reference to one of his most controversial exhibitions- that of his own bodily wiping's.
The playing cards are a reference to Billy Apple's consistant use of text and numbers either visually or mathmaticaly.
The pattern paper, needles and thread are really just embellishements relating to the construct/deconstruct concept but play a role in balancing and calming the overall collage. (In my opinion!)
The printed apples in acrylic are obviously a reference to Billy Apple.
I have really enjoyed exploring this style of collage which I have written a bit more about below (with a close up photo) and it was an interesting challenge putting synthetic items and natural items together on the same page this way. I've really enjoyed the relative lack of rules and the freedom of working instinctively.

Lisa, I want to give this collage the thoughtful response it deserves. The Apple experience was very powerful to you I can tell.
I need a few days, though. New things like this sometimes have to be first be absorbed to be properly considered.
Besides...I know you aren't waiting on pins and needles because you have little ones at home at it is Almost Christmas (feel the excitement?)!

It is clear that Billy is powerful for you .. that is wonderful!
I think it works ... some ways it does. You have the pick of the q-tips relating to the red behind the card and on the upper left.
You have green leaves and then green paint in different places so the eye moves among them.
The brown circles related to the brown paper and to the leaves and pods ...
The blue of the q-tips blends with the green behind some of them .. so that integrates it in.
The white of the card relates to the whitish of the paper at the top and the q-tips.
So I feel there is a lot of balance and motion in this piece. Was that helpful?

I like your use of the apple as a tribute to the artist! It is the natural meeting the synthetic, but that it what people encounter all the time, and very interesting to see it portrayed in this way.
It is also aesthetically pleasing and lively, inspite of the fact the natural and synthetic objects could be quite dischordant if not handled in the right way. All the colours mesh, like the browns and greens, and the playing cards and buds stand out and therefore look very lively next to all the natural harmony, enjoying some sort of lively deconstruction process. I don't know if this means anything to you lol

Gosh, while I am reading about Billy Apple, you are opening gifts and celebrating Christmas. He sounds extreme but then that is how art changes, not by the every day execution of stuff that has been done over and over, but by new territories that are explored by the Billy Apples. The body wipes are a bit much, but he does sound somewhat like Warhol in his extremism. I like your tribute to him but is it extreme enough? he he.

Bev, I am pleased I some how managed to make dead leaves and synthetic materials look lively! Your are right though, the risk of dischord was quite high even though I was only doing what we do in society all the time. I hadn't thought of that!

This work reminds me of some of the work doen by super realists near the turn of the 19th century- the ones who could paint a postage stamp so well it looked like a counterfit. I think it is the playing card that resonates
this within me.
I like your colors, composition - the white q-tip and card draws my eye and the image is very grounded.
Your work is deep - again to me it speaks of life issues, with strength and fortitude.
