Pulp Redux Update

I've been busy in my little corner of the globe with Lisa J's book. Mostly it's been 'fine tuning' things that I have already done, tidying a scruffy corner and adding an extra detail here and there. Stuff that can't really be seen but makes the whole thing better. Small is big.

I found a Tui beer bottle cap on the footpath in Opunake. Originally the caps are bright red but this one was wonderfully squashed and rusted. I knew as soon as I found it that it was perfect for Lisa's book!

The biggest change I made was to the layout. My scroll is no longer a scroll, I opened it flat, made a fabric cover for it and turned it into a book that can be removed. Unfortunately I didn't photograph the cover(!) of it but you can see the opened book below. The brown book sits on top and is removed to reveal a 2nd removable book. The scroll is now the page. I did this to make my final page less bulky but I think it looks better too. The white fabric it all sits on is now stitched to the red fabric and the cover.

Since I took these pics I've also made most of the back cover/page and started stitching it all down. The spread is now 2 double sided pages joined in the middle with a fabric spine. I've never used fabric before but now I can't imagine not using it! We're all aiming for Feb 22nd to have our books ready to post and then the next round can begin. The next time I post my book pages here they'll be finished so watch this space!

Hi Lisa - oh I just LOVE those tui bottle caps! I'm always picking them up and putting them into my collection of bits and pieces. I'm sending one off to Alicia next week, in fact. But yours is a find indeed!! It makes me want to try and age mine deliberately. I love the way the red has rubbed away and gone all creamy behind the tui. Genius find and such a gorgeous couple of fabric pages. Yes, I love fabric too. Can't imagine arting without it.

You make me realize that I don't have the time and energy and patience to do this kind of dedicated work, but that I admire you for doing it very much and I'm glad that one of us is doing it. The art is not lost! It lives in New Zealand.

Lisa, this is sooooo..yes.. luscious..as Robyn said! I love what you've done!!! The bottle cap is to die for.. as you know some of my most coveted art bits have been found on the ground distressed by nature. Your textile work is just gorgeous.. i can't believe you haven't worked in fabric before! The layers...so gorgeous.. i just can't wait to see this in person! It will be such a surprise when we all see our books again as it's hard to see all the tiny details...just as you mentioned. Really, just delicious.. i can't wait to see all those lovely fabric layers sandwiched toegther when the book is closed...

Better and better! One of the great challenges for an artist is knowing when to stop ... I'm thinking that issue isn't a problem for you. Just the same, it's a good quality for an artist to nurture.

Love the changes you have made Lisa. The bottle cap is just gorgeous. All that rusty patina is just yum! I can't wait to poke around in all these books as they travel through our hands. Less bulky is it? Wait till you see yours now! Poor book will never close again. I'm on track for postal date just tying up loose ends too. Hoping to post around the weekend.
